EMC SMARTS GAINS ROUTING-LAYER KNOWLEDGE THROUGH INTEGRATION WITH PACKET DESIGN'S ROUTE EXPLORER

Holonomix's Module Gives Smarts a 'Power Boost,'
Revealing Real-time Routing Changes

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 25, 2008 – Users of the EMC Smarts IT management platform can now gain access to real-time information about their networks' routing behavior, thanks to a new module from Holonomix that integrates route analytics technology from Packet Design into the Smarts environment.

UK-based systems integrator Holonomix worked with Packet Design to develop its S3c-PIM Module, which makes routing topology and event information from Packet Design's Route Explorer available directly to users via their Smarts consoles.  Smarts users can now be alerted immediately when routes change, traffic is rerouted, VPNs are "leaking" routes, or network access is lost – all conditions that can have far-reaching consequences for service delivery.

The S3c-PIM Module operates through direct API-level integration with the Smarts application suite, importing routing information from Route Explorer into the Smarts data repository.  This allows Smarts users to view the dynamic, end-to-end layer 3 routing topology map created by Route Explorer, quickly pinpointing the precise path traveled by application or service traffic through their IP networks.  Using this knowledge, the Smarts system can localize problems to devices on a specific path, eliminating the need for network operations staff to hunt through and manually correlate large volumes of device-specific management data.

Darren Prince, Holonomix managing director, said the integration of route analytics "gives Smarts a power boost.  It provides access to information that users previously could gather only in a rudimentary and approximate way, by manually sifting through device-specific data from disparate sources such as SNMP polling and large numbers of uncorrelated SYSLOG messages.  With direct access to the real-time routing protocol state, Smarts users move beyond device data to a dynamic, network-wide view.  With S3c-PIM, the network operations desk now becomes immediately aware of any changes in routing behavior, so they know not just when a fault occurred, but where.  They get actionable real-time alerts on routing path changes, the introduction of inappropriate prefixes, and route 'leakages' that could compromise virtual private networks (VPNs)."

Jeff Raice, Packet Design's executive vice president of marketing and business development, said, "Smarts is the second major network management platform, after HP OpenView, to be fully integrated with Route Explorer.  Our customers who also use Smarts have long recognized that integrating the two products would create a complete picture that reveals much more about their IP networks than discrete sets of information ever can.  The new module from Holonomix allows Packet Design to satisfy the demand we've seen from Smarts customers in the service provider, enterprise and government arenas for integration with our market-leading route analytics solutions."

The S3c-PIM module, priced at $50,000, is available now from Holonomix.  The module currently supports the OSPF routing protocol, with support for the BGP, IS-IS and EIGRP protocols to be added later this year.  Holonomix is also working on a version of the product that will integrate with and add value to Smarts' own Network Protocol Manager (NPM) solution.

Packet Design's route analytics technology works by passively "listening" to routing protocols to discover all routers on an IP network, computing an end-to-end view of the routing topology, and updating that topology in real time as routing changes occur.  By having such information, network engineers can identify and resolve problems more quickly, perform more effective network maintenance, and have a sound basis for accurate network-change planning.
